New 2017 Equinox...but poor gas mileage..

Hello Everyone....purchased a 2017 Equinox 1 month ago...formerly a Town and Country owner...2.4L, AWD, Convenience, Closeout panel, mud flaps, power lift-gate (this was a must and was very hard to find), body-side moldings installed (chrome strip in middle...boy, makes a difference!), and chrome door handles dealer installed...and it's black!...anyhow, this vehicle is shockingly getting poor gas mileage...one tankful 177 miles, another 185, another 187..minimum 13.5 gallons installed...average fuel economy currently 15.9, sometimes 12.9, have see 9.9...what is wrong?...I purposely picked the 4cyl for better gas mileage than my van, but it is worse!...no change of driving habits, both remote start, same idle time, etc....I am having serious regret about not getting the 3.6L...

2017 Equinox LT, 2.4, black, convenience, closeout panel, power liftgate, splash guards, chrome center bodyside moldings, chrome door handles, Weathertech, rainguards, seatcovers, LED lighting, speakers to come...

Re: New 2017 Equinox...but poor gas mileage..

A couple of questions -

How many miles on your car - as it breaks in mileage will go up.

How fast do you drive ? Above 60, gas mileage goes down significantly. Remember you are driving a loaf of bread that is not very aerodynamic.

Do you drive in hilly country ? This hurts the 4 cyl. lots.

Is you driving city or highway ?

What is your tire pressure ? I have set mine at 35 PSI, and it helps with less friction.

Re: New 2017 Equinox...but poor gas mileage..

engine WEAR IN occurs up to about 12,000 to 15,000

so expect a slight increase in MPG as miles add up.
You also have the AWD model- and that lowers MPG.

City driving does lower MPG .

------------

the 3.6 mated to the 6 speed returns excellent MPGs--- especially on all highway.
I drove shy of 300 miles yesterday and hit
32 MPG @ 140 miles driven
30.8 MPG @ 295.1 miles driven
(of course staying 55-60).....

heres the catch----- in my Traverse !!! I hit 126,000 while on the trip.

Come on guys. I have oil consumption issues with my 2.4 and it's not that bad.
Break in will reduce your mpg but that is very low to me.

Yikes! Take that to the dealer. That's not acceptable. I mean, break-in helps. My 2014 improved like 10% between new and the 10K mile mark, but your's is getting worse.

9.9 MPG sounds way out of range. If you don't sit in traffic for hours, or let the car idle for half the tank, there is a problem. Does the exhaust smell like gas? How about the oil?

Something's really screwed up with that mileage. Could result in more problems down the road, fouled cat. converters, O2 sensors etc. Get it to a dealer quick, their scan equipment should show the problem easy.

Re: New 2017 Equinox...but poor gas mileage..

Just for comparison I have a 2017 LS FWD 2.4 and been averaging 26-27. Probably 75% freeway and 25% City. I got it at about 600 miles and it was averaging 22. Probably from test drives and loaners. Should probably get it looked at. Im at 3000 miles now.

Re: New 2017 Equinox...but poor gas mileage..

There are other possibilities as stupid as a stuck brake calipers.
have a couple of brakes rubbing your rotors will eat a huge chunk out of you mileage and that could easily have come that way from factory.
Try coasting to a stop (on a hill) and check for heat coming off the rotors/brakes.... don't touch it or you could get burnt.
If any of them are hot and you didn't apply the brakes, you may have found the problem.

just one POSSIBILITY. There are a host of possible causes.
