Brake fluid replacement on 2013 NOX

I have a 2013 Nox with 24000 miles. I called & scheduled at my dealer a routine oil change and the fix for the recall on the windshield wiper motor. When I got there the service person told me I should have my tires rotated at every oil change, that I needed my brake fluid drained (every 2 yrs) due to particles in the fluid. I assumed he knew what he was talking about. Then he came back & said I needed a new air filter, and cabin filter. The recall was not fixed because they didn't have the part. He asked me if I had checked to see if they had the part--gee I thought that was their job!!! I left with a $329 bill. The routine items make sense, but what about the brake fluid?? Is this new? I have never changed the rake fluid on my car before. Thanks for the feedback.

It is generally recommended that brake fluid is flushed/replaced every several years. Brake fluid absorbs water from the air which can cause deterioration/rusting of brake lines and parts.

Brake fluid should be changed, how often depends on who you ask.
Some imports say 3 years or 30,000 miles.
Some domestic manufactures say 10 years or 150,000 miles.

I would use some common sense and say 5 years and 50,000 to 60,000 miles.
Just about the time you would probably need brake pads.

If your fluid is dark and thick have it flushed.
Brake fluid does absorb water which can damage brake components such as your calipers and master cylinder.
Moisture can also lower the boiling temp of brake fluid and reduce the effectiveness of your brakes.

My maintenance schedule says 150,000 miles. That's why I wondered if something had changed since I bought the car new in 2013.

They have test strips that can tell you if it needs to be changed, based on the water content. That said, I changed mine at 75k, and about 5 years, because I was having the front pads replaced. Makes sense to do it at the same time as brake work.

Great information. Thank you all very much. They never even looked at my brake fluid. They looked at my 24,000 mileage as soon as I arrived and said I needed it flushed. Think I'll be chatting with the service manger.

If they didn't test it and your manual says it wasn't due for a long time, you should go chew them out. That's not acceptable, and borderline criminal. They bring you in for a free recall, sell you a bunch of services, and then don't do the recall?

Re: Brake fluid replacement on 2013 NOX

I live in California.
Not that humid as back east.
But I bleed my brakes at the 5 yr mark... which I did on my 2010 Traverse.

Our 2013 Equinox- is coming up and I will do a simple bleed and refill at 5 yrs.

A family member has a 2013 Equinox - the manual states the change interval for the air filter is 45,000 miles. Did the dealership show you the old filter? Was it very dirty?
