Timing belt

Our 2011 Equinox has a timing belt that needs to be replaced. In my research (not offered by the dealership) there is a Specual Coverage 12313. It is about replacing the balance chain. Is that different than a timing chain? If it is different can the timing chain be replaced at the same time as the balance chain at little cost? Thanks, Mike

Who told you the "timing belt' needs to be replaced? Have you talked to a dealer?

The dealership mechanic. It is a timing chain not a belt. There are little bits of metal in the oil as well.

Just to set the record straight:
The 2.4L 4 cyl has two "timing chains", this is a generic term.
The first one (outer) is your Timing Chain. It connects your crankshaft to the two camshafts.
The second one (inner) is your Balance Chain. It connects your crankshaft to the two balance shafts and drives the water pump.
You have to remove the Timing Chain to gain access to the Balance Chain.

Not sure. We are having the oil level checked every 500 miles to make sure. There is a different special coverage out for an issue that causes oil level to lower. We were told of this by the dealership but not of the coverage for the timing chain. And the only reason we were told of the oil issue is because we could save half the cost of replacing the timing chain if the oil level was dropping and needed to be fixed and could have all done at the same time.

The vehicle has 79,000 miles.

quick reference to the locations of timing chain and balance chain. timing up top with guides that go bad creating a slapping metal noise in engine. Special project 12313 dated July 2013 is for chrome pin wear stretching chain. Balance chain covered if worn, Hi Pressure fuel pump covered. but timing chain isn't. This is what I have been told since I have been going down this same road. Dealership missed the noise in engine costing me a new engine. No help from GM Customer Service with this problem. Hope you have better luck than I have had with Dealership or GM Customer Service.
