Tailgate rusting

2014 'Nox

Well, I broke the cardinal rule. I looked at a used car in the rain. And low and behold the car is absolutely beautiful with one major exception. There is quite a few rust spots starting on the tail gate, and not in the usual spots on the bottom, one is under the rear glass, one is down by the equinox emblem, and one is just below the license plate. They seem to be coming up THRU the paint, and are not caused by paint chipping. - Chevrolet will not do anything about it because I am not the original owner (I don't know why that has anything to do with it.) and they will only fix holes. - About how much does a repair cost, if I have them sand the whole tailgate and repaint it? Should I go dealer, or independent?

(I don't know why that has anything to do with it because you actually didn't give GM any money for your purchase. Should they repair every 3 4 5 year old vehicle because they made it? I'd go to an independent and get a quote.

Time out - If I buy a 2 year old vehicle from an independent dealer, GM is still responsible for the rest of the Bumper to Bumper warranty. Why should rust be any different ? GM got the original sale and part of the sale price was a cash reserve to cover future warranty work. Just my $0.02

Yes, I think they should. Especially when its coming UP thru the paint, THEY did not prep something right.

I did buy the car at a Chevy Dealer. and when i complained, I think they took a sharpie marker and globbed it over one of the spots. More have appeared lately.

Re: Tailgate rusting

If this is a VERY recent purcgase, I would go back, talk to the sales manager face to face, tell him it was raining and wet when you bought the car, and indicate to him that it was nit disclosed that the vehicle had a "rust" problem. If it is obvious, and can be seen easily when it is dry in the daytime, it was not disclosed and can be subject to a non disclosed issue.

Was it a Certified Used GM"? If it was you have even more ammo.

Re: Tailgate rusting

I tried that. I even called the owner, and got the run around. - Didn't know it, but I found out afterwards, its one of the most hated GM dealers in CNY.

I've gotta say this, I am very upset with Chevy for not covering this. It does not matter WHO owns the car, the fact is, its rusted. The one will be a hole before the end of next winter. I have been noticing that they are much less to help customers out than in the past. I am not sure I will buy another. And yes, the representative I talked to on the phone, told me that they were not covering it because it was my responsibility to inspect the car before purchase... They did offer to contact the dealer on my behalf, but I doubt that would've done anything, since they work together.

Appears as tho its a 3 year old vehicle BTB does not cover rust unless its rust thru rust could have been caused by stone chips etc When one takes delivery of a new vehicle there is a limited amount of time to correct paint work

Re: Tailgate rusting

OP DIDN'T GO OVER VEHICLE WHEN PURCHASED COULD HAVE HAD DEALER BRING IT INSIDE. As for rust thru the paint not buying it where he states its rusted are places that are prone to paint chipping license plate frame banging against lift gate when slammed closed chrome applique biting into paint when lift gate is slammed ice scrapper damage when cleaning the window. As second owner he does not know what previous owner did to vehicle.

Re: Tailgate rusting

the paint is NOT chipping! The rust is coming up thru the paint. And the tailgate is electric and doesn't get "slammed" - My mothers 2006 Equinox did not have ANY rust on it at 5 years old.
